Purple silk bespoke wedding dress for a ceremony in a Scottish castle

I’m delighted to share a wedding from last autumn, featuring a purple silk bespoke wedding dress for a ceremony in a Scottish castle.

Emma and her husband David are a very special couple. Emma contacted me initially asking if I would be up for a challenge. Curious, I read on and she told me that she would like a Cadbury purple coloured wedding dress that incorporated some tartan she had chosen, and that both she and her husband-to-be were blind.

I am up for a challenge and I didn’t hesitate!

From the very beginning I learned so much about how much I take for granted when designing and working with colour and shape.  Emma brought her husband David to all her fittings and apart from having a great laugh with the pair of them and their lovely dogs, I became very used to explaining and describing shape and texture, not only verbally, but with touch. David always came over to Emma after each fitting so he could also describe and feel the shape of her dress as it progressed. It was an exercise in trust between us and I was so touched that they chose me to create Emma’s wedding dress. I so looked forward to each fitting.

As well as wanting to wear a ‘real wedding dress’, Emma told me that both texture and sound were important to her, as well as the dress being something practical to wear. So we chose a silk Dupion for her A-line shaped dress which gave a bit of a crunchy rustle sound when she walked and overlaid the skirt with a purple silk chiffon, so there was a combination of rustle and softness. Emma’s bespoke wedding dress also had a beaded neckline which gave further sensory interest. A tartan bow finished the back view.

Of her colour choice, Emma said,

“I was thinking maybe a black dress to start, then purple came to match for deco, flowers and accessories but deciding on a shade of purple became Cadbury purple because it is a colour we both really like from when we could see… and our love of Dairy Milk, of course. Then there was this lightbulb moment “purple dress” being such a regal colour, getting married in a castle, it just had to be done!”

Both lovers of Scotland, Emma and David’s humanist wedding took place in the private chapel at Cluny Castle in Aberdeenshire.
